How to create a sailing competition
SailingMetrics allows you to easily administrate and manage sailing competitions. In order to create a competition, you need to signup on our platform first.
We try to make it as simple as possible to create a sailing competition and publishing results. Competitions can be created through this website as well as via our SailingMetrics smartphone app.
1. Create the competition
Navigate to the competitions page and click on the "New competition" button. It is important to mention that a user account is required to publish competitions and that the button to create competitions is only shown if you are logged in.
For the competition you can enter the following information:
- Competition name: A name to identify your competition
- Status of the competition - can either be draft or published (visible to everyone).
- Start and end date - if the event is only on a single day you can select the same day for start and end date
- Venue - optionally specify the location of the competition
When creating a sailing competition you can optionally create a competition class. However, you can always add, edit or modify competition classes at a later stage.
Once the competition was created you should be able to see your competition on the competitions page. By clicking on the competition name you should be able to access competition details and modify further.
2. Create competition classes
For every sailing competition separate classes can be used. Competition classes allow you to group entries for separate scoring.
When creating a sailing competition class, you can set the following parameters:
- Name of the class
- Handicapping system
Different handicapping systems can be used to score your competition class. Currently we support:- One-design
- Yardstick
- Portsmouth Yardstick
- Division factor
- Handicapping list
3. Create competition entries
Once the competition classes are created you can add entries which correspond to sailors that participate in your competition.
With every entry you can specify the following information:
- User on our platform: Optionally you can select a user from our database which will auto-suggest additional details such as boat, sail number and sailing club.
4. Create races
The races tab on your competition allows you to add, edit and possibly delete races. For a race you can set the following data:
- Competition classes: For every race one or more competition classes can be assigned
- Planned start
- Actual start
- Race status
5. Create race results
Results can be added to every sailing race. A result includes the following data:
- Entry: The entry for which you would like to record the result
- In addition to that, one of the following is required:
- Rank: Rank of the sailor in the race, in case no time recording is required or desired.
- Finish timestamp: Time when the boat crosses the finish line. Used to calculate the sailed time base on the race start.
- Sailing time: Duration of the sail
- Finish code: Codes such as did not start (DNS), did not finish (DNF), disqualified (DSQ), etc.
Competition results
Results for your sailing competition are automatically created. Individual races are scored by the specified rating system whilst overall results are obtained using low point scoring system. Results are available on the results tab of your sailing competition
Results of individual races can also be downloaded as a csv file. This allows you to further analyse or apply custom rating logic.
App for regatta time tracking
Instead of manually entering finish times and ranks for your sailing competition. You can also use the SailingMetrics app to simplify the recording of race finishes.
