How to Mount a Camera on a Dinghy to Review and Improve Your Sailing

Watching yourself sail is uncomfortable the first few times. You see the late hike, the pinched groove, the gybe that looked fine from inside the boat and looks ragged on screen. That discomfort is exactly why footage is so useful. A coach can tell you what they saw from the shore, but they only see the boat from one angle, for a limited window, and they are relying on memory by the time they talk to you afterwards. A camera mounted on your own dinghy gives you the view from inside the moment, every session, and it does not forget or soften what happened.

This post is about the practical side of getting that footage: what to mount, where to mount it, and how to get real value out of watching it back. It is not about the phone-as-instrument setup that records your GPS track and heel angle, which we covered in getting started with tracking your sailing activities. This is specifically about camera placement for reviewing technique: how you move, how the sail is set, how the boat behaves through a tack or a gybe, and how all of that lines up with what your telemetry says was happening at the same moment.

Why Bother Filming Yourself at All

Sailing happens fast and it happens to you, not around you, so a lot of what actually goes wrong in a tack or a mark rounding is invisible in the moment. You feel the boat slow down but you do not necessarily feel that you were late to cross the boat, or that the mainsheet hand paused for half a second too long, or that your weight was still on the wrong rail when the sail filled. Video removes the guesswork. You can watch the same three seconds ten times if you need to.

It is also one of the few forms of feedback that scales with how much you sail. A coach costs money and time and is not there every session. Video costs a mount and a bit of battery, and it is there every time you go out. Sailors who build a habit of reviewing footage regularly tend to fix small technical faults faster, simply because they get far more honest looks at what they are actually doing.

Choosing a Camera

You do not need expensive gear to get useful footage. What matters more than resolution or brand is that the camera survives being on a small boat: spray, knocks, the occasional dunking, and long exposure to UV and salt. Here are the options that actually hold up.

A cheap waterproof Android phone. This is the option most club sailors end up with, often because they already own one for GPS tracking. A rugged, IP68 or IP69K rated phone in the 100 to 200 dollar range, the kind with a thick rubberised case and a screen you can read in sunlight, records perfectly usable video and costs little enough that losing it overboard is annoying rather than devastating. The main downside is field of view: phone cameras are not built for action footage, so the frame is narrower and less forgiving than a dedicated action camera, and mounting angle matters more.

A dedicated action camera. GoPro and similar cameras are built for exactly this job: wide angle lenses, genuine waterproofing without a case, good stabilisation, and mounts designed to survive vibration and impact. The wide field of view forgives an imperfect mounting angle, you will still get the crew and the sail in frame even if the mount is not pointed exactly where you planned. The downside is cost, and needing a phone nearby if you want to check framing before you launch.

A 360 camera such as the Insta360. These solve a specific problem: you do not have to decide where to point the camera. It records everything around the mount point, and you choose the framing afterwards in the app, reframing the same clip to follow the sail, then the helm, then the horizon, all from one recording. The trade-offs are shorter battery life than a standard action camera, since the sensor is doing more work, and an extra processing step before footage is watchable in a normal format. A mast top or boom mount is where a 360 camera earns its keep on a dinghy, since one unit up there can give you both a look down at the cockpit and a look out at the sail and horizon.

Budget action cameras. The unbranded cameras that show up cheaply online are tempting, and some are fine. Be realistic about weaker low light performance, mounts that do not always match GoPro-style accessories, and inconsistent waterproofing. Test one in a bucket of water at home before trusting it on the water.

Mounting Positions

Where you put the camera changes what question it can answer. There is no single best position, because different mounts show you different things, and a lot of sailors end up rotating between two or three positions depending on what they are working on that week.

Mast Top

A masthead mount captures the whole boat, sail shape, and crew position from above.

A camera at the masthead gives you the view no other mount can: the whole boat from directly above, sail shape, crew position, and how far you are heeling, all in one frame. It is the closest thing to having a coach permanently stationed above your boat, and it is particularly good for seeing things you cannot judge from inside the boat, like whether your crew weight is actually where you think it is through a tack, or how much the boom is sweeping the water on a gybe.

The practical challenge is getting the camera up there and keeping it there. Most sailors either use a purpose-built masthead mount that clamps around the mast below the top fitting, or fix a small action camera onto the existing masthead float or wind indicator bracket if there is room. Secure it with a lanyard as a backup, because retrieving a camera from the top of a mast mid session is not realistic and a dropped one usually goes straight in the water.

Vibration is the other issue. The masthead moves more than any other part of the boat, especially in chop, so footage from up there is shakier than from lower mounts. A camera with good built-in stabilisation, or a 360 camera you can crop and stabilise afterwards, handles this better than a basic phone camera. Check battery life before committing to a full day of filming, since retrieving the camera to swap a battery is as awkward as the initial installation.

On the Boom

A boom mount, usually near the gooseneck or partway along the boom pointing back towards the cockpit, gives you a close, steady view of the helm and crew at work. It sits lower and closer than a masthead mount, so the footage is more stable and the detail is better for reading exactly what your hands are doing on the sheet and tiller through a manoeuvre. It is a good position specifically for tack and gybe review, where you want to see hand movement, weight transfer, and timing rather than the big picture.

The boom moves a lot during gybes, so use a proper clamp mount rather than tape or zip ties alone, and keep the camera close to the boom's centre of gravity to avoid leverage that works the mount loose over a season. Also watch where the sheet and control lines run. A camera that interferes with the mainsheet block or the crew's normal hand position will get in the way exactly when you need it not to.

Front Facing, from the Bow

A forward facing camera near the bow, pointed back at the cockpit, shows you the boat from the direction of travel: how you are trimmed fore and aft, how much spray is coming over, and how the helm and crew are positioned relative to each other. It is a useful angle for upwind sailing in particular, since you can see the groove you are sailing and how the boat's attitude changes as you go from pinching to footing.

Mounting options depend on the boat. A pulpit or bow fitting gives you something solid to clamp onto. On a bare foredeck, a suction mount works in calm water but is worth backing up with a tether, since heavy spray or a wave over the bow can pop it loose. This position takes the most direct exposure to spray and green water of any mount on the boat, so waterproofing matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Rear Facing, from the Stern

A transom mount shows the full cockpit, however sail might only be partially visible due to limited field of view.

A camera mounted at the back of the boat, on the transom or pushpit if you have one, looking forward, gives you almost the opposite view to the bow mount. You see the whole cockpit, the crew, the sail from behind, and the wake you are leaving, which is a surprisingly good indicator of how clean or how draggy your boat is moving through the water. A ragged, wide wake usually means excess rudder movement or the boat being sailed slightly off its lines. A narrow, straight wake is a good sign.

This position is also one of the easiest to rig, since most dinghies have a transom fitting, rail, or tiller extension bracket nearby that a clamp mount can attach to without modification. It sits close to the waterline, so it picks up more spray in a breeze, but generally less than a bow mount because it is moving with the boat rather than punching into waves.

Rudder Mounted

This is a more specialist position but worth knowing about. A small waterproof camera fixed to the rudder head or gantry, angled to catch the blade and the water flow around it, is mainly useful for specific technical work: how much helm you are carrying, whether the rudder is stalling in hard turns, or how clean your tacks and gybes look from directly behind the transom at water level. It is not a mount for every session, but if you are chasing excessive helm or drag, it gives you a view nothing else on the boat can. Mount it as a small clamp on the gantry or tiller head rather than the blade itself, which would add drag, and keep it low profile so it cannot catch a line or foul the tiller extension through a tack.

Other Positions Worth Trying

A shroud or chainplate mount, pointed across the boat, gives a side-on profile view good for judging heel angle and mast rake by eye, which pairs nicely with the heel data your GPS track already records. A cockpit coaming mount pointed at the crew's feet and legs is useful for hiking technique and footwork through tacks. And if you have access to a chase boat, filming from alongside gives the cleanest, steadiest footage of all, though it obviously requires a second boat and a driver.

Mounting Hardware and Practical Tips

A few things apply regardless of position. RAM-style ball mounts are the most versatile option across all of these positions, since the same base clamp can be swapped between an action camera adapter and a phone holder depending on what you are filming with that day. Adhesive and suction mounts have their place on flat surfaces like a foredeck or transom, but always back them up with a lanyard, since a failed mount usually means a camera in the water rather than on the ground.

Keep the arm as short and stiff as you can get away with. A long, flexible arm gives more positioning freedom but also amplifies vibration into blurry, unwatchable footage, especially in chop. A short rigid arm with a fixed-angle head is almost always the better trade.

Plan around battery life rather than discovering it the hard way. Know how long your camera actually records on a charge in cold, wet conditions, usually shorter than the manufacturer's figure, and either bring a spare or accept you are filming part of the session rather than all of it. Targeted footage of one manoeuvre is often more useful than an unreviewed two-hour file of everything. And test any new mount on land first, checking the actual frame rather than the one you expect, so you are not finding out after a long session that the camera was pointed at the sky the whole time.

Reviewing Footage Alongside Telemetry

Footage on its own is useful. Footage lined up against your GPS track and speed data is a lot more useful, because it turns "something happened here" into "this specific thing happened at this specific moment, and here is exactly what my speed and VMG were doing at the same time."

If your footage comes from a separate camera, a mast top, boom, or bow mount running independently of the phone, you can still get most of the same value. Go through your session on the metrics timeline and flag the moments where something interesting happened in the data: a drop in VMG, a wide or ragged looking loop at a mark, an unusually long recovery after a tack. For each one, watch the matching clip. Often the data and the footage agree quickly. A slow tack on the numbers turns out to be a late roll or a stalled headsail on video, and now you have something concrete to work on rather than a vague sense that the tack felt slow. It is worth reviewing footage with someone else when you can, a coach, a training partner, or just a more experienced sailor from your club. You are often too close to your own sailing to spot the pattern yourself, in the same way it is hard to hear your own accent. A second pair of eyes watching the mast top view of your tacks will often catch something in thirty seconds that would take you weeks of solo review to notice.

Building a Habit Out of It

The sailors who get the most out of onboard footage are not the ones with the most expensive camera. They are the ones who review consistently, session after session, and who change one mount or one focus area at a time rather than trying to fix everything at once. Pick a mount that answers the question you actually have this month, whether that is tack technique from the boom, weight distribution from the masthead, or helm balance from the rudder, and stick with it for a few sessions before moving on.

Combined with your GPS data, that footage stops being a highlight reel and starts being a genuine training tool. The data tells you where to look. The video tells you why it happened. Together they give you the kind of honest, specific feedback that used to require a coach standing on the shore with a stopwatch, available to any club sailor with a phone, a cheap mount, and a bit of patience reviewing footage after the sail.
