The Analysis View

Once a session finishes processing, it becomes an activity with its own analysis page at sailingmetrics.com/sails/<id>. You'll land here automatically from My Uploads, from an "Open detailed analysis" button in the app after uploading, or by sharing the link directly — see Uploading Sessions for how a session gets here in the first place.

Summary bar

Across the top: the sailor's name and avatar (linking to their profile), boat, venue, duration, distance, top speed, and wind direction/speed. The session's owner can edit the boat and wind here — either edit re-triggers analysis, so leg and speed statistics stay in sync with the correction. From the same bar you can share the session (a downloadable social card, native share, copy link, or direct post to Facebook/X/Instagram), leave a comment, and — if you own the activity — rename it or delete it. An overflow menu also offers "Multi-track course analysis" (loads this track into the standalone course-comparison tool) and "Edit sessions" (trim or re-split the upload this activity came from).

If someone else's track overlaps yours in time and location, a banner offers to add them to a side-by-side comparison via "Compare tracks", or to invite a sailing companion who isn't on SailingMetrics yet.

The player

Below the summary bar is an interactive player made of up to three panels, which you can drag, resize, and hide individually — restore a hidden one from a button that appears in the summary bar, or restore the whole layout at once via "Reset layout" in the overflow menu:

  • Map — the GPS track with an animated boat marker, wind arrow, maneuver markers, and any course marks that have been drawn.
  • Video — shown if a video was recorded or uploaded alongside the track, synced to the same timeline as the map.
  • Controls — play/pause, a scrubber, and playback speed, driving the map, video, and the charts on the Session Overview tab together from a single cursor.

If you own the activity, you can draw a start/finish gate and marks directly on the map — the same tool used by the standalone course-comparison page — to unlock leg-by-leg statistics for this single track. You can also add, reposition, or delete individual tack/gybe markers by clicking on the map. Any course or maneuver edit re-triggers analysis, shown as an "Updating analysis…" banner until the refreshed statistics land.

Analysis tabs

Below the player, a set of tabs breaks the session down from different angles:

  • Coach — shown when AI coaching commentary exists for the session (a Pro feature). A chat interface for asking a sailing coach questions about this specific session.
  • Session Overview — time-series charts for the whole session: speed over ground (with VMG overlaid once a wind direction is set), course over ground, heel, pitch, compass heading, and any series from a connected sensor. All charts share the player's cursor, so scrubbing one moves the rest, and maneuvers and course marks are annotated directly on them.
  • Leg by Leg Analysis — once at least two course marks are defined (drawn manually, inferred from the GPS track, or populated from a race's course), the track is split into legs with duration, distance, heading, average speed, and VMG for each — the same statistics as the standalone Multi-Boat Analysis View tool, scoped to this one track. A leg sketch shows where on the water each leg was actually sailed.
  • Start — shown for races with a defined start line: how far from the line you were at the start gun and how much height you gained in the following 30 seconds, each compared as a percentile against other recorded starts on the same boat, plus optional notes on which end of the line was favoured and which tack you started on.
  • Speed Analysis — steady-state speed, with the seconds around every tack, gybe, and mark rounding excluded so maneuvers don't skew the numbers. Includes a polar chart and speed/VMG broken down by point of sail — upwind (0–60°), reach (60–120°), and downwind (120–180°) — with the option to compare directly against another of your sessions on the same boat. Older activities that haven't been reanalysed since this view shipped instead show a legacy layout with separate upwind and downwind sections, each with a speed table, a histogram, and a per-leg breakdown.
  • Maneuvers — every detected tack and gybe, with a timestamp you can click to jump the map and video to that moment. Tacking analysis covers VMG through the tack and a box plot of tack angle comparing port-to-starboard against starboard-to-port tacks, plus body-movement analysis from pose estimation where available. Gybing analysis covers speed over ground through the gybe.

League score

For activities scored as part of a league race, a small table shows the race course distance, your scoring speed, and your scoring speed corrected with the boat's Portsmouth Yardstick number.
