Training Mode
Training Mode runs a live-coached practice session on the water. Once you start recording, the app continuously watches your GPS track, heading, and heel angle and speaks short pieces of commentary as things happen — how your speed compares to the rest of the session, how much height you gained or lost on a tack, when the wind appears to have shifted. It never tells you what to do next; it only reports what just happened, so you can act on it yourself.
Setting up a session
Before you start recording, a short setup flow asks for:
- Boat – required. Pick from your saved boats or add a new one.
- Venue – optional. The app can detect it from your current position, or you can search for it manually. It's only used for context and future comparisons — skip it if you're unsure.
- Wind – a starting direction and speed, either fetched automatically for your current location or entered manually. This is only a starting point: wind direction is continuously re-evaluated on-device once the session is under way and will drift away from it as real data comes in.
- Scenario – optional. Narrows which commentary gets spoken; every detector still runs in the background regardless of what you pick, so nothing is missed if you skip this step.
Scenarios
Choosing a scenario doesn't change what the app analyses — it changes what it talks to you about, so a session focused on tacking practice isn't interrupted with straight-line VMG updates.
What the app comments on
During a session you'll hear commentary on:
- Legs – at the end of each upwind, downwind, or reaching leg (and periodically during a long one), the app reports your speed over ground, VMG, and heel angle for that leg, compared against your own legs of the same type earlier in the session.
- Maneuvers – after each tack or gybe, the height gained or lost through the turn, compared against your other tacks/gybes so far.
- Marks – when the app detects you rounding a windward or leeward mark.
- Wind – when the estimated wind direction shifts by a meaningful amount.
- Race starts – when the app detects the onset of a start sequence (General Racing and Race Starts scenarios).
Comparisons are always against your own performance earlier in the same session — there's no session-to-session or sailor-to-sailor comparison yet, and the first few legs or maneuvers of a session are reported without a comparison, since there's nothing yet to compare them to.
Wind direction
The working wind direction shown during a session comes from the best available source, in order: a connected BLE wind sensor, the app's own on-device wind estimate (re-evaluated roughly every five minutes from your recent track), and finally the starting estimate from setup, which fades out over the first hour of the session. You can override the current wind direction manually at any time from the live session screen.
Recording and review
Training Mode records using the same GPS, sensor, and video pipeline as regular Live Tracking, so heel, heading, and a connected wind sensor all feed into the commentary if available. Spoken commentary can be muted at any time from the live session screen; a running transcript is also shown on screen as it's generated. Once you stop recording, the session is saved to your device like any other recording, with the full commentary transcript saved alongside the track for you to review afterward, synced to your map and speed data.
